Wild Organic Maine Blueberries

IMG_4373A few days ago my dear friend Jane brought me back my order of organic blueberries from her daughter’s farm in Maine. Jenny and Hugh and their two adorable kids own the farm and are the stewards of a huge patch of wild blueberries.  They are the best blueberries I have ever eaten.  The farms name in Intervale blueberry farm and if you are ever in Maine in August/September look them up. IMG_4378 I wanted to just write a quick post because I feel like I have been remiss here. Other than eating them fresh so far I made a blueberry peach upside down cake. I added the blueberries to the cake batter….IMG_4344…but I need your help/inspiration tell me what some of your favorite things to do with blueberries.

Because NYC is such a big place I tend to focus mostly on my 'hood and the ones that are close by: The East Village, Bowery, Chinatown and Williamsburg. My love of travel has no limits really, I'm always ready to get on a plane. I was lucky enough to have a business for many years that allowed me to spend a lot of time in South East Asia. These days I've been spending time in Mexico, Germany, Canada and the West Coast of the U.S., but check back you never know where I might end up.     I think blueberry peach upside down cake is pretty darned inspired! We get a lot of blueberries from our bushes and i also come up short for inspiration. They’re not my favorite fruit. We mostly freeze them and add to yogurt.

    Let’s count the favorite ways to use blueberries: Morning protein shakes, homemade jam, blueberry ketchup (which doubles wonderfully as a glaze on ribs!), as a balsamic reduction to pour over pork tenderloin, dried (and used in homemade granola bars), in muffins, in homemade frozen yogurt. Oh….the list is endless.

    When I think of wild blueberries, I think of freshly baked popovers and wild blueberry butter from Jordan Pond House in Acadia National Park. Sadly, JPH is now under new management so my wife and I are not sure if the experience will be as awesome as before. It was so simple yet so good. Enjoy your wild blueberries!
