Abeego Flats – Revolutionizing Kitchen Storage

Yesterday there was a knock at my door, when I opened it the UPS man was waving at me from the elevator and a box was sitting on my doorstep.  Mmmmmmm what could this be?  Usually I assume everything is for Neil, so it’s always a nice surprise when it’s for me!  This box was from Brooklyn Kitchen so my excitement was palpable, I got a knife and opened the box in short order.  What I found in this box confounded me, for two reasons: I had no idea what they* were or who they came from.  No where on the package did it say…happy birthday from ….

The box contained two packages of various sized Abeego Flats. Now if you are anything like me you might ask: What the hell is an Abeego Flat? They are an outback destination in Australia or a coffee drink, they are these super ingenious all natural way to package and store food.

It’s been decades since I bought plastic wrap, I strive for a plastic free kitchen even though that seems impossible as people are constantly challenging me by bringing things over in, yes you guessed it, plastic bags!  I reuse them to cover dough or left overs, it’s not exactly pretty, but it serves a purpose and it prevents me from having to buy plastic wrap. Now with Abeego the world can be liberated from plastic wrap forever!  Here’s what they say on their website about what Abeego is:

Abeego is the original reusable food storage, handcrafted with an authentic blend of beeswax, tree resin and jojoba oil infused into fabric made of hemp and cotton. The natural attributes of each ingredient used to create Abeego contributes to a smart food storage that keeps food fresh and tasting delicious. Store your food the way nature intended with our stylish Abeego Flats, Abeego Wrap and Abeego Snack.

And best of all it’s made in Canada.  It looks like you can order direct from their website or check out your favorite kitchen store and see if they carry them, and if not ask them to start carrying them!   In NYC, obviously Brooklyn Kitchen has them  And for those of you who are Brooklyn-phobes, Brooklyn Kitchen is opening up a new store in Manhattan!

I digress, check out these videos and let me know what you think, and I will keep you updated as I begin to use mine.

Oh and I am going to make a guess as to who sent me these, but if I am wrong and you are reading, please let me know, that is if it isn’t Natan.

About urbanfoodguy

I'm a self taught cook with a dedication to buying and eating food that is as humanely and sustainably raised as possible. Which is why in addition to recipes you will see a lot of environmental/political reporting here. I started cooking when I was about 6, it's something I always loved to do. Watching Graham Kerr - aka "The Galloping Gourmet" - was what got me started and I have never really looked back. Over the years I've been a private chef, a caterer, and a food stylist for magazines such as Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Real Simple, Oprah, Martha Stewart's Everyday Food and many more. I've also worked in the prep kitchen for the Food Network on the Bobby Flay and Paula Deen shows. Now I work at home in my kitchen sharing with you here recipes that I create or that other people have created that inspire me and I think you will like. I love my neighborhood (the Lower East Side of Manhattan) and I love to travel. Because NYC is such a big place I tend to focus mostly on my 'hood and the ones that are close by: The East Village, Bowery, Chinatown and Williamsburg. My love of travel has no limits really, I'm always ready to get on a plane. I was lucky enough to have a business for many years that allowed me to spend a lot of time in South East Asia. These days I've been spending time in Mexico, Germany, Canada and the West Coast of the U.S., but check back you never know where I might end up. I do consulting, cooking classes, and freelance lifestyle writing so if you are interested please send me a note: urbanfoodguy@gmail.com
