Chocolate Stores in Brussels

IMG_3029Brussels is famous for its chocolate or pralines as they prefer to call them.  From the airport when you arrive to every block you walk there are chocolate stores of every sort. I tried to document them and at a certain point I had chocolate store photography fatigue.  My favorite shop was in Antwerp, the first few rooms where very classic with huge classic murals on each wall, elaborate moldings, high ceilings and crystal laden chandeliers.  The store is called The Chocolate Line and is one of only 3 Chocolate store listed in the Michelin guide, the mad genius behind The Chocolate Line is Dominique Peroone who besides being a very well respect chocolatier invented something for a part he did for the Rolling Stones called a Chocolate Shooter which is confusing to me but it is a way of inhaling cocoa like it was cocaine?  Anyway the most interesting part of the store in Antwerp is that it is located in a Palace that was lived in by many famous people one of whom was Napoleon….IMG_3014And given that Antwerp is the unofficial Flemish (Dutch) capital of Belgium it’s no surprise that they have cannabis chocolates:IMG_3012 These are pictures of the kitchen – speaking of drugs – touring this kitchen feels like one big acid flashback….but in a good, chocolaty way 😉 IMG_3011IMG_3010IMG_3008IMG_3007IMG_3006IMG_3005IMG_3004 Oh and for you bacon fans – yes they had a Miss Piggy bacon truffle….IMG_3001IMG_2999IMG_2998So after this shop everything is a little down hill…but just to give you some highlights and to show the incredible diversity of options here’s a little photo tour… the first picture I took because of the frequency of chocolate shops that were next store to pubs or beer shops….welcome to Brussels!IMG_3027IMG_3134

About urbanfoodguy

I'm a self taught cook with a dedication to buying and eating food that is as humanely and sustainably raised as possible. Which is why in addition to recipes you will see a lot of environmental/political reporting here. I started cooking when I was about 6, it's something I always loved to do. Watching Graham Kerr - aka "The Galloping Gourmet" - was what got me started and I have never really looked back. Over the years I've been a private chef, a caterer, and a food stylist for magazines such as Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Real Simple, Oprah, Martha Stewart's Everyday Food and many more. I've also worked in the prep kitchen for the Food Network on the Bobby Flay and Paula Deen shows. Now I work at home in my kitchen sharing with you here recipes that I create or that other people have created that inspire me and I think you will like. I love my neighborhood (the Lower East Side of Manhattan) and I love to travel. Because NYC is such a big place I tend to focus mostly on my 'hood and the ones that are close by: The East Village, Bowery, Chinatown and Williamsburg. My love of travel has no limits really, I'm always ready to get on a plane. I was lucky enough to have a business for many years that allowed me to spend a lot of time in South East Asia. These days I've been spending time in Mexico, Germany, Canada and the West Coast of the U.S., but check back you never know where I might end up. I do consulting, cooking classes, and freelance lifestyle writing so if you are interested please send me a note:
