Why You Should Take Eden Foods OFF Your Grocery List

Grocery_Guide740Here is the deal in case you haven’t heard, Eden Organics is suing the federal government because it basically just hates Obamacare in particular the stipulation in the affordable care act that mandates employers to cover contraception. The CEO Micheal Potter claims to be a devout catholic and feels it’s wrong for him to pay for birth control – but hey wait – he’s not buying birth control for himself or his wife he is buy health insurance for his employees who may not be catholic or even religious.  So obviously this is just an other right winger who wants to flip the finger to you know, socialized medicine and that crazy Kenyan Marxist President Obama.  Makes me furious.

Your employer has no right to parse out how you use your health care.  If he doesn’t want to practice or use birth control that is his business, but how his employees use it is their – and given all the bull crap the right in this country spread about how important individual liberties are they sure do come across as a bunch of hypocrites when they do shit like this by trying to curtail others civil liberties.  Oh and can I just mentioned here that the population of the planet is now 7 BILLION.  Just because Mr Potter lives in Out Teabagistan doesn’t mean the rest of us do and this kind of litigation against a popular program aimed at providing affordable health care to those in need by a company that sells organic foods to what I can only imagine is a bunch of left leaning liberals is not only morally repugnant it’s bad business.

You can reach out to Eden Food on their Facebook page and let them know what you think.

What I think , as if it’s not clear is that even if they dropped the lawsuit tomorrow now that I know what kind of a person runs the company I can promise you I will never ever until my dying day buy an Eden Foods product again.  And I certainly would encourage my readers to do the same.  If you want to know more about this story New York Magazine has a nice sum up.

I know this is my second political posting in a row and I promise next up will be pretty food or a menu or something 😉

About urbanfoodguy

I'm a self taught cook with a dedication to buying and eating food that is as humanely and sustainably raised as possible. Which is why in addition to recipes you will see a lot of environmental/political reporting here. I started cooking when I was about 6, it's something I always loved to do. Watching Graham Kerr - aka "The Galloping Gourmet" - was what got me started and I have never really looked back. Over the years I've been a private chef, a caterer, and a food stylist for magazines such as Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Real Simple, Oprah, Martha Stewart's Everyday Food and many more. I've also worked in the prep kitchen for the Food Network on the Bobby Flay and Paula Deen shows. Now I work at home in my kitchen sharing with you here recipes that I create or that other people have created that inspire me and I think you will like. I love my neighborhood (the Lower East Side of Manhattan) and I love to travel. Because NYC is such a big place I tend to focus mostly on my 'hood and the ones that are close by: The East Village, Bowery, Chinatown and Williamsburg. My love of travel has no limits really, I'm always ready to get on a plane. I was lucky enough to have a business for many years that allowed me to spend a lot of time in South East Asia. These days I've been spending time in Mexico, Germany, Canada and the West Coast of the U.S., but check back you never know where I might end up. I do consulting, cooking classes, and freelance lifestyle writing so if you are interested please send me a note: urbanfoodguy@gmail.com
