The Winter Market

IMG_1873Most people think of farmers markets as something that happens in the spring through the fall, but here in NYC the Union Square market goes all year round.  And you might be surprised at what you would find in the dead of Winter at the market.   My personal routine is to go to the market every week regardless of season – when I went on Friday I was happy to see a good dozen or so farmers who were the selling the requisite and to be expected root veg but also getting clever and expanding on their base products by turning them into things as diverse as face cream to potato chips.

If you think farmers markets are only for the Summer – I hope this photo essay will make you think again!IMG_1874 IMG_1875 IMG_1876Goat Farmers going beyond cheese and milk into personal care productsIMG_1877 IMG_1879 IMG_1880 IMG_1881 One day when I feel flush I want to buy one of the big gallon jugs of maple syrup! When I used to live in Toronto my room mate and friend could often be seen, fridge door open, taking a gulp of maple syrup when she thought no one was looking!IMG_1882 IMG_1866 Potato farmers also making the most of their crop by making amazing potato chips out of their equally awesome potatoes.  IMG_1867 IMG_1868 IMG_1869 IMG_1870

About urbanfoodguy

I'm a self taught cook with a dedication to buying and eating food that is as humanely and sustainably raised as possible. Which is why in addition to recipes you will see a lot of environmental/political reporting here. I started cooking when I was about 6, it's something I always loved to do. Watching Graham Kerr - aka "The Galloping Gourmet" - was what got me started and I have never really looked back. Over the years I've been a private chef, a caterer, and a food stylist for magazines such as Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Real Simple, Oprah, Martha Stewart's Everyday Food and many more. I've also worked in the prep kitchen for the Food Network on the Bobby Flay and Paula Deen shows. Now I work at home in my kitchen sharing with you here recipes that I create or that other people have created that inspire me and I think you will like. I love my neighborhood (the Lower East Side of Manhattan) and I love to travel. Because NYC is such a big place I tend to focus mostly on my 'hood and the ones that are close by: The East Village, Bowery, Chinatown and Williamsburg. My love of travel has no limits really, I'm always ready to get on a plane. I was lucky enough to have a business for many years that allowed me to spend a lot of time in South East Asia. These days I've been spending time in Mexico, Germany, Canada and the West Coast of the U.S., but check back you never know where I might end up. I do consulting, cooking classes, and freelance lifestyle writing so if you are interested please send me a note: urbanfoodguy@gmail.com

The Pretzel guys used to be hot. What happened?

That is too funny! Indeed the pretzel men have always been very cute, and not just one of them…over the years there have been several guys that made you want to go over and buy pretzels even though you might not have wanted/needed/or even particularly liked pretzels. It was a cold day and this was a random shot…but lets face it I’ve been going to the market for 20 years…age, unfortunately, does happen 😉
