Happy New Year!

For the first time ever the Empire State Building is using its fancy new computerized lighting system to put on a show!  Usually it’s just different colors, then sometime last year they got risqué and started to light each side of the building so you would have 4 sides of different colors.  For the election they had 2 red corners and 2 blue corners and when the election was called the entire building went blue (of course if the Republicans had won it would have been red).   So this is very exciting, I also like how even though it is still very early in the evening you can hear people already honing horns and making noise!

Lately I feel very remiss in my blogging duties, I long for the days when I could post several things a day, every day…maybe now that I have a new computer that will be possible.  My old computer was doing this thing where you would write a sentence or a paragraph then it would highlight it and delete it…so getting even a few words written could be a real challenge!  Speaking of real challenges my oven just broke…thank goodness I am not cooking tonight!

Here is to a great new year, filled with good food, good friends and ovens that work!

And to toast the year in here is a Champagne cocktail I got from my friend Jane (I have no idea where she got it from) that I thought was very seasonal and hope you enjoy.

Rosemary Infused Champagne Cocktail

In a small sauce pan add 1/2 cup of cane sugar and 1/2 cup of water over medium high heat.  Stirring with a wooden spoon cook until the sugar has melted then add 5 or 6 branches of Fresh Rosemary.  Turn off the heat and cover, let sit for an hour.

Strain into a container with a pour spout.

To make the cocktail fill a shaker with ice then add 1/2 ounce rosemary simple syrup, 3/4 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice, 3/4 ounce Aperol and 3/4 ounces St Germain shake vigorously then strain into a Champagne flute top with a Cava, Prosecco or Crémant.

Enjoy and Happy New Year!

About urbanfoodguy

I'm a self taught cook with a dedication to buying and eating food that is as humanely and sustainably raised as possible. Which is why in addition to recipes you will see a lot of environmental/political reporting here. I started cooking when I was about 6, it's something I always loved to do. Watching Graham Kerr - aka "The Galloping Gourmet" - was what got me started and I have never really looked back. Over the years I've been a private chef, a caterer, and a food stylist for magazines such as Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Real Simple, Oprah, Martha Stewart's Everyday Food and many more. I've also worked in the prep kitchen for the Food Network on the Bobby Flay and Paula Deen shows. Now I work at home in my kitchen sharing with you here recipes that I create or that other people have created that inspire me and I think you will like. I love my neighborhood (the Lower East Side of Manhattan) and I love to travel. Because NYC is such a big place I tend to focus mostly on my 'hood and the ones that are close by: The East Village, Bowery, Chinatown and Williamsburg. My love of travel has no limits really, I'm always ready to get on a plane. I was lucky enough to have a business for many years that allowed me to spend a lot of time in South East Asia. These days I've been spending time in Mexico, Germany, Canada and the West Coast of the U.S., but check back you never know where I might end up. I do consulting, cooking classes, and freelance lifestyle writing so if you are interested please send me a note: urbanfoodguy@gmail.com
