Temporary Market

On  Monday I walked up to Union Square to pick some things up only to discover that the market wasn’t there, instead it had been transformed into a parking lot of emergency vehicles. To one side was this sign:Just a couple blocks along both the avenue and in the meridian was the farmers market!  Speaking with farmers I got the impression that it will be in this location probably through the weekend,  but check here for updates. 

…mid november and we still have tomatoes!

So pretty, and as I was contemplating them I don’t think I have ever cooked a purple cauliflower. Golden cheese sauce would make a lovely and tasty contrast.

Cranberry beans are my favorite, and so versatile I even use them in Indian food instead of chickpeas.  They as dry and store well.All over the market were signs like the one at top asking people to buy a bag of groceries and donate it for those New Yorks hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy,  the donation station was doing a brisk business…

Some of these bags were donated directly by the farmers.  I love New Yorker’s, they’re tough, generous and great in times of hardship.

I love my neighborhood (the Lower East Side of Manhattan) and I love to travel. Because NYC is such a big place I tend to focus mostly on my 'hood and the ones that are close by: The East Village, Bowery, Chinatown and Williamsburg. My love of travel has no limits really, I'm always ready to get on a plane. I was lucky enough to have a business for many years that allowed me to spend a lot of time in South East Asia. These days I've been spending time in Mexico, Germany, Canada and the West Coast of the U.S., but check back you never know where I might end up.     Cranberry beans! AKA Roman beans and October beans down here in southern appalachia. Have to get to our mkts early in the AM to get them, they go quickly. So don’t get as much as we’d like. I simmer with the biggest pork shank (fresh local) I can find (cook shank 1 hour before). Could do osso bucco ISO pork….guess who’s already thinking of dinner before he’s out of bed…

      Sounds like a delicious meal! They are also called Borlotti Beans – so many names! I use them to make Past e Fagioli which also benefits from a smoked ham hock or pork shank – but then what doesn’t? But seriously I can’t wait to finally meet you guys and come over for dinner! Yum.
